The Val Canale-Canal del Ferro area has witnessed extraordinary and fascinating historical events, and maintains this rich heritage.

The local culture has preserved and adapted the traditions of the Latin, German and Slavic ethnic groups - not only in cultural, economic and social terms, but also in gastronomy.

There is a rich and centuries-old intermingling of the culinary traditions of the mountains of Friuli and Carnia, with Carinthian and Slovenian kitchen and mediterranean flavours.

The local approach to food has been deeply influenced by the unspoiled nature and ancient forest that surround the area, with the abundance of venison and mushrooms, berries and mountain cheese.

Alongside these typically Central European aspects, it is perhaps surprising to find fish and mediterranean dishes, particularly around Tarvisio.

This is part of the influence of the many Italians from the south who live here, and the enthusiasm of Austrian and Slovenian neighbours, who have always been great lovers of fine wine and mediterranean dishes.
