Church of the “Beata Vergine di Loreto”
59 Via Dante Alighieri, Tarvisio
Built by the Von Rechbach family in 1689, this is a splendid example of Baroque art.
The entire church is frescoed, and both the mural paintings and the furnishings are in the Baroque style, creating a very elegant and refined appearance.
The paintings in the church are all related to the Assumption of the Virgin into Heaven, a subject which is treated in an amazing way.
All the works conserved in the church are attributable to artists from across the Alps, although the frescos in particular clearly show the influence of Italian art.
The paintings on panels hanging from the balustrade of the small chancel date back to around 1520 and show the Apostles, the Annunciation, and the Visitation.
There are also a number of canvases on the walls of the church, dating from the end of the 1600s, although they somewhat upset the original decorative equilibrium.
The Main Altar, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of Loreto, is richly adorned with gilded wooden volutes and spirals; in the centre is a statue of the black Madonna with the infant Christ in her arms giving blessing.
