The church of San Nicolò in Coccau

SS13, Tarvisio

posizione/location

One of the most fascinating churches of the entire valley.

It started as a fortified church in a strategic point overlooking the Roman road coming from what is now Austria. Inside the church, the two main walls are painted with scenes that narrate the suffering of Christ (from the flagellation to the crucifixion), his death and resurrection, and the last supper.

These frescoes are of great historical and artistic value, and show the fusion of two distinct styles that had previously remained separate, a combination of the Italian school and the one from across the Alps.

Another large fresco shows the Adoration of the Saint Three Kings, and the depiction of the story offers a reading with many very interesting details.
