A heritage of inestimable value: the huge natural environment that surrounds Tarvisio contains dense forests of beech, Norway spruce and silver fir, mingled with open meadows and, higher up, pastures and rocky outcrops, which offer the perfect habitat for numerous species of animal.

The mammals found here include all the species of alpine ungulates; roe deer, deer and wild boar can be found in the forests and meadows, and chamois and ibex in the rocky alpine areas.

There are also many large carnivores, including foxes, weasels, badgers, beech martens, skunks, otters, golden jackals, lynxes and brown bears.

Other small and cheerful forest friends include common hares and mountain hares, squirrels, dormice and marmots.

There are numerous species of birds, including the capercaillie (the symbol of the Forest of Tarvisio), the black grouse, the hazel grouse and the ptarmigan, as well as nocturnal birds of prey such as the owl, the Ural owland the Boreal owl.

Daytime predators include the golden eagle, the griffon vulture and the bearded vulture.

There are also many important species of amphibians, reptiles and insects.
