Over the centuries, the unique location of Tarvisio and the whole Val Canale, has led to many historical events tied to the different ethnicities of the area (Italian, Slovenian and German).
A heritage of inestimable value: the huge natural environment that surrounds Tarvisio contains dense forests of beech, Norway spruce and silver fir, mingled with open meadows and, higher up, pastures and rocky outcrops, which offer the perfect habitat for numerous species of animal.
The area of Val Canale has a very complex plant ecology due to the great variety of ecological conditions and the significant climatic and geological variation.
In the year 1007 the Holy Roman Emperor Henry II gave the Forest of Tarvisio to the Bavarian Bishop of Bamberg.
